Macaw, one of the regular names for about 18 species of large colorful parrots native to tropical North and South America. These dazzling-colored long-tail birds are some of the most eye-catching parrots in the world.

Hyacinth Macaws are the panda bears of the parrot world. Their mesmerizing beauty with an abiding smile sweet loving nature and rarity make them one of the most appealing of all birds. They are native to central and eastern South America. There are three main populations: one in the Pantanal wetland region of Brazil, eastern Bolivia, and northeastern Paraguay; another in the Cerrado region of Brazil’s eastern interior; and one in the Amazon basin of Brazil.

They are easily tranquilized and some can even mimic sounds. These parrots often squeal noisily, continuously humbling, and occasionally bite with their powerful beaks, even though many people whether they are local or around the world like to keep them as pets.

Appearance: They are cobalt blue coloring with bright yellow around the eyes and at the base and the corner of the peek.

Size: They measure 37.5 to 39.5 inches long and their massive size would cause anyone to pause and take notice.

Lifespan: Their expectation of life is around 50 years but few have survived to 65 years old in captivity.

Feeding Habits: Hyacinth Macaws have a very special diet as their diet consists of almost the whole of a palm nut if you have difficulty in finding palm nuts you can substitute it with Brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds, coconut, or macadamia.

Habitat: They are one of the most social birds. They are often found in bigger groups of between 12 to 20 birds which orphan consists of pairs and family trios of parent and chick.

Nesting: They make their nest in clip faces or tree cavities depending on what is available. Only produce once per season and they don’t breed every year, they mainly breed after the rainy season which is July to December.

Exercise: With a wingspan of around 4 feet, they must be given enough time to exercise and room for a good stretch. A minimum of 1 of 2 hours on daily basis should be given on a play gym or other safe areas so that they can maintain their muscles.

Hyacinth Macaws numbers are declining for the last few years, they are now considered as endangered species and there are some reasons. They are exported illegally and traded in the worldwide pet trade or their habitat has been changed or lost due to cattle ranching or mechanized agriculture, or native people keep them as a pet or hunt these words for their colorful feathers for use in headdresses or other souvenirs for tourist.

The total population size for them is between 8000 to 10000 individuals. The numbers are decreasing on an everyday basis and they are classified as vulnerable on the list of threatened species. Ranchers are being encouraged to leave nest trees standing, replant food trees, and erect nest boxes for the macaws.
